On Writing Anywhere but Paradise
I am very curious about change and how we adapt to it. Or don’t.
And how we respond to fear.
How life is a glorious mess.
So, I wondered, what would happen if I set a story about a reluctant newcomer to Hawaii in 1960, one year after statehood?
My grandfather emigrated to Hawaii in the early 1900s. My father was born there, and so was I. Most of my growing up years were spent on Oahu. This is a work of fiction, but it was informed by a seventh-grade experience at my intermediate school.
